Book Aid responds to tsunami tragedy
The book worlds response to the tradgedy is documented and CILIP also are getting involved.

Because of recent thefts at the Clermont County library, users will now be required to have their picture taken.
And in a somewhat related way fingerprint recognition is taking over from library cards in many schools.

The preservation of newspaper collections 1700 - 1950 was completed in December, and the Project has preserved:
> 1,350 newspaper titles
> 30,500 reels of microfilm
> 12.2 million pages of newsprint

New Audit Scotland figures, released on Thursday, show the number of items borrowed, including books and audio tapes, fell by over 1.5m.

West Lothian Council has attracted a lot of attention over its library services change of approach to working with children.
Developing Reading Communities
The Reading Agency has been working on a project "Developing Reading Communities" in it schools and public libraries are urged to collaborate in supporting young readers.

Richard & Judy Book Club Update
The Richard & Judy Book Club, which kicked off last week with The Shadow of the Wind (Orion) by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, is once again having a substantial positive influence on sales, booksellers reported this week.
Nielsen BookScan figures show that the Richard & Judy effect sent The Shadow of the Wind up from 10,287 in a week to 24,704. The title also reached the top three in the paperback chart, which is unusual for a trade paperback.
